The Happiest Song Plays Last
by Quiara Alegría Hudes

October 10 – October 27

This fall, the Santa Fe Playhouse join forces with Teatro Paraguas and Ironweed Productions to bring Pulitzer Prize-winning Quiara Alegría Hudes’ masterful epic, The Elliot Trilogy, to Santa Fe. This powerful trilogy—Elliot: a Soldier’s Fugue, Pulitzer Prize-winner Water by the Spoonful, and The Happiest Song Plays Last—follow main character Elliot Ortiz from the battlegrounds of Iraq to a Subway sandwich shop in his home of Philadelphia, and finally back to the Middle East to confront a past that has haunted him since the war. The trilogy span four generations over 60 years, grappling with the impacts of war and addiction on families and how redemption can be found within intergenerational care, compassion, and wisdom.

The Happiest Song Plays Last finds Elliot, an Iraq War veteran, in an ancient Jordanian town at the dawn of the Arab Spring. As Elliot struggles to overcome the traumas of combat by taking on an entirely new and unexpected career as an action-film hero, halfway around the world in a cozy North Philadelphia kitchen, his cousin Yaz takes on a heroic new role of her own: providing hot meals and an open door for the needy.

Playhouse Artistic Director Vaughn Irving says, “For the 2019 season, The Playhouse has been bringing new and exciting theater to Santa Fe, theater that asks questions about what it means to be human. The sixth show of our season focuses on the Latinx experience in America, but it is much more than that. The final episode of the Elliot Trilogy, The Happiest Song Plays Last explores the value of community, the morality of war, and the power of music, food, and culture to unite people. This show stands alone as a moving, funny, and powerful piece, but seeing all the chapters of this story in succession is a once in a lifetime experience that is not to be missed. People who attend all three will get an in-depth look at family, love, challenged prejudices, and personal growth.”

This community-wide event and collaboration among these three long-standing Santa Fe theater companies begins

September 26, 2019, incorporating rolling three-week runs of each play in the trilogy: Elliot: A Soldier’s Fugue (Teatro Paraguas) opens September 26; Water by the Spoonful (Ironweed Productions) opens October 3; The Happiest Song Plays Last (Santa Fe Playhouse) opens October 10. The weekend of October 10, all three plays will run concurrently, giving local patrons and tourists the opportunity to see the entire Trilogy within the space of one weekend. Santa Fe area audiences also have the opportunity to see the Trilogy over five weekends.

Performed by Devin Zamora (Elliot); Roxanne Tapia (Yaz); Tara Khozein (Shar); Oscar Rodriguez (Agustin); Argos MacCallum (Lefty); Robert Henkel Jr. (Ali).

The Elliot Trilogy package tickets and single-performance tickets will be available through the Santa Fe Playhouse.

“Intensely engaging new drama. Hudes’ story not only comes with the unmistakable whiff of authenticity but conveys how none of our lives are entirely ordinary, and how small stuff actually connects to all kinds of big stuff, be it matters of global import, community progress or the cliches of Hollywood representation. Hudes is a very accomplished storyteller, a playwright with an emergent, fulsome American narrative.”
Chicago Tribune

“As ever, Hudes’ writing is poetic but wry, full of swagger and poetry. Oh, how the lines sing.”
