The Happiest Song Plays Last
by Quiara Alegría Hudes

October 10 – October 27

At the dawn of the Arab Spring in an ancient Jordanian town, an Iraq War veteran struggles to overcome the traumas of combat by taking on an entirely new and unexpected career: an action-film hero. At the same time, halfway around the world in a cozy North Philadelphia kitchen, his cousin takes on a heroic new role of her own: as the heart and soul of her crumbling community, providing hot meals and an open door for the needy.

The Happiest Song Plays Last will be presented as part of Quiara Alegría Hudes’ The Elliot Trilogy  in collaboration with Teatro Paraguas and Ironweed Productions. Make sure to see all three! First, Elliot: A Soldier’s Fugue at Teatro Paraguas, then the Pulitzer Prize-winning Water by the Spoonful  by Ironweed Productions at Teatro Paraguas’ Second Space, and finally Santa Fe Playhouse closes out the trilogy with The Happiest Song Plays Last. This is the first time theaters in Santa Fe have collaborated in this manner, and it’s only the second time The Elliot Trilogy has been produced to run consecutively and simultaneously.

The Elliot Trilogy package tickets and single-performance tickets will be available through the Santa Fe Playhouse.

“Intensely engaging new drama. Hudes’ story not only comes with the unmistakable whiff of authenticity but conveys how none of our lives are entirely ordinary, and how small stuff actually connects to all kinds of big stuff, be it matters of global import, community progress or the cliches of Hollywood representation. Hudes is a very accomplished storyteller, a playwright with an emergent, fulsome American narrative.”
Chicago Tribune

“As ever, Hudes’ writing is poetic but wry, full of swagger and poetry. Oh, how the lines sing.”
