Now in its 102nd year, The Melodrama returns and will continue to roast the city and state we love. SFP seeks a witty playwright to join The Melodrama 2024 anonymous writing team.

The theme for The Melodrama 2024 is FIRE.

The following playwrights are encouraged to apply:

  • Indigenous, Black, People of Color Playwrights
  • Playwrights with disabilities
  • Women Playwrights
  • LGBTQIAA+ Playwrights

The selection committee will consist of a diverse group of theater-makers who reflect New Mexico’s rich diversity.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

  • There are no fees to submit.
  • Writers must live in or have been born/raised in New Mexico.
  • Only accepting blind submissions. Playwright’s name should not be reflected anywhere in the document.
  • Accepting PDF formats.
  • Please submit a 3-5 page work sample that highlights your comedic writing to submissions@santafeplayhouse.org with Melo Submission on the subject line.

  • Selected playwright will receive a $500 honorarium.
  • Selected playwright must be available for 3-4 video meetings from May through August.
  • Selected playwright will be asked to write a 20-25 minute short Melodrama that includes the following ingredients: Hero, Heroine, and Villain characters; Incorporate the ensemble of 6 actors; collaborate with other playwrights in the opening and closing numbers which will most likely include music/song parody.
